Research

Our clinical research activity is based in the following areas:

Respiratory muscle endurance

The primary aim of this research is to assess a novel device to monitor respiratory muscle endurance in children. We will evaluate the feasibility of using this method to measure respiratory muscle weakness in children with degenerative neuromuscular diseases, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a simple, reliable method that can be used to monitor decline of respiratory muscle function in children to predict the need for assisted ventilation.

Vapotherm in bronchiolitis

We have started a pilot trial looking at the feasibility and safety of this oxygen delivery device in infants with severe bronchiolitis.

FeNo and reducing ICS

Pilot study of ability FeNo to predict successful reduction of inhaled corticosteroids in children with mild asthma. To start December 2007.

MASCOT

We are one of the 10 centres in this study of asthma therapy in 6-14 year olds, due to start in March 2008
